This mountain town makes for awesome family vacations

There are so many fun things to do in Flagstaff, Az., we almost don’t know where to start. But one thing is certain: If you’re up for one of the best family vacations of your life, Flagstaff is your sky-high destination.

Nestled at 6,910-feet, Flagstaff is a place of towering Ponderosa pines, breathtaking desert scapes, and Grand Canyon magic. Visit the Grand Canyon

This is a Flagstaff must-do. After all, the Grand Canyon is a certified wonder of the world! It’s also located just a short drive away and is considered a “Flagstaff destination.” Tours run pretty much all the time, and many Flagstaff companies offer a ride right from where you’re staying.

Explore a Real Pueblo

Wupatki National Monument is a place of magic that’s just a short drive from Flagstaff. On guided tours, you’re allowed to explore a real pueblo that was once home to members of the Anasazi and Sinagua tribes. Imagine experiencing a day in the life of these ancient Native Americans!

Check Out an Ancient Volcano

In Flagstaff they call them “craters,” and there are a ton of them. Several companies host incredibly adventurous off-road tours and educational eco tours daily. And, when you stay in Flagstaff, they’re all nearby. A great place to start is Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, located right in Flagstaff. Ride the Rapids

Flagstaff is famous for its Colorado-River-rafting opportunities. Excursions are available for every level imaginable. You can brave roaring rapids with an experienced guide or float along for a few hours on a tube. Or, why not try both? Grand Canyon Whitewater Rapids gets great ratings and could be a great place to start.

Have Fun in the Snow

If you’re planning a family vacation in winter, you’ll be happy to know that Flagstaff skiing and snowboarding are second to none. Several nearby ski resorts and snow-play areas are open for business every winter. And you can rent any gear you need at one of the area ski rental shops.

Tour the Titanic

The Titanic Museum in Branson is the world’s largest museum attraction. Visitors experience an interactive tour that is full of surprises. Now through November 2018, the museum is featuring a collection of dresses worn by the women aboard the ship.

Ride Roller Coasters Through the Trees

Branson’s most popular theme park, Silver Dollar City, is named “One of America’s Top 10 Parks” by Fodor’s Travel. The 1800s-themed park has more than 40 rides and attractions, live shows and concerts, craftsmen demos all day, 18 award-winning restaurants and more. At Christmastime, Silver Dollar City becomes a winter wonderland illuminated with more than 6.5 million lights.

Explore Caves

Branson is right in the middle of the Ozark mountains, which are filled with thousands of incredible natural caves. Cave tours in Branson abound, with dozens of companies offering adventures for all ages and every spelunker—beginner to advanced. One of the best, Marvel Cave, just happens to be inside Silver Dollar City. This eerily fun and fascinating cave was first discovered by the Osage Indians around 1500 AD.

Hike, Bike & Ride Horses

Branson has over 200 miles of trails on more than 100,000 acres of gorgeous forest land. And it’s all just waiting to be explored. One of the best places to get all of the above off your bucket list is Dogwood Canyon Nature Park. It’s a preserve of epic proportions with waterfalls and views (and a few steep trails) that will leave you breathless. They even have tours of ancient burial caves.

Shop ‘til You Drop

The Landing—located on the shores of Lake Taneycomo next to Historic Downtown Branson—has over 100 shops, all kinds of restaurants, and plenty of Branson-worthy entertainment for the whole family. Visitors love the Landing’s family friendly boardwalk, which runs 1.5 miles along the shores of Lake Taneycomo.
